His revolutionary style transformed the drums as a traditional time-keeping instrument. Employing a multilayered, polyrhythmic approach, Jones created a dynamic interplay with soloists unprecedented by earlier drum stylists. Jones is best remembered for pushing Coltrane into the stratosphere with his elemental power, dispersing and displacing the beat among all four limbs.
